Changes to the Law on Accident Reporting Regulations

HSE has announced that there will be changes to the law concerning the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurences Regulations (RIDDOR). These changes to the law will come into effect on 6th April 2012.

What are the changes?
The main change is to the "over three day" injury reporting requirement. This is due to increase from "over three days" to "over seven days" of incapacitation before the injury will need to be reported - this is not counting the day of the accident or injury.

The deadline for reporting the "over seven day" injury is also changing. After April 6th 2012, employers will have 15 days from the day of the accident to report the injury.

What About Over Three Day Injuries?
Employers will still be required to record any incident or injury that results in incapacitation of the employee for more than three consecutive days. The ideal way to record these incidents is in the HSE Accident Book.
Records of injuries will need to be kept for a minimum of three years.
